What is it?

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disorder of the brain and spinal cord. The immune system of the body attacks “myelin” which is a protective layer around the nerve fibres, creating lesions along its path. The period of illness and disability can vary among the individuals and depending on the severity of the condition, the person with MS may or may not experience periods of relapse and remission of symptoms through their lifespan.

How can it affect me?

From a physical perspective, people with MS may experience:

  • Fatigue
  • Blurred, double or loss of vision
  • Spasticity (resistance to movement)
  • Weakness or numbness
  • Unsteadiness, loss of coordination and difficulty walking
  • Speech, swallowing, bowels and bladder may be affected

How Neuphysio can help!

Though MS is a chronic disease that can be progressive, Physiotherapy helps to recover from episodes, maintain strength and balance and assist with walking pattern and endurance. Gait training, balance training and bracing are used to enhance stability and safety when walking. Activity modifications and adaptive device prescription and trial are part of care, including ADP authorization for Walkers, Wheelchairs and Scooters.

At Neuphysio, you will find PoNS certified Physiotherapists and programs. This advanced cranial nerve stimulation, authorized for use in Canada for people with MS, primes the brain and enhances outcomes when combined with Physiotherapy.

Having trouble remembering your routine or need assistance to perform safely, Neufit Training offers unique disease specific Training for people with MS. Registered Massage Therapy helps with relieving painful trigger points associated with spasticity, loosening the tissues to allow for more relaxed movement. Osteopathy can address the relationship between the function and the structure of tissues in the body impacted by the disease. This treatment works to make sure every small part of the body is able to contribute to normal movement.
